Interest in Pursuing a Ph.D. after the Master's degree?

The University of Michigan (U-M) Master student can apply for a change of program from Master to Doctoral program.  Students in one graduate program may apply to change to another program within the Rackham Graduate School.

International students are required to complete their Master program before being admitted to the Ph.D. program.  This is an International Center and Rackham policy.

  • Application Requirements:
    • Rackham Program Online Application
    • GRE scores
      • Scores are valid five years from the test date.  If you submitted your GRE scores and they are still valid, you do not need to request ETS to send them to us again.

  • We request interested students to email us at me-grad-application@umich.edu to notify that they wish to apply to the Ph.D. program.
    • The ASO needs to know 1) the term planning to apply to and 2) who is the professor providing support.  The ASO will then contact the professor to ask for a letter of support to confirm they plan to be the student's faculty advisor.
  • Term to Apply:  Apply to either the Winter or Fall term due to having faculty support.
    • However, if you plan to apply to the Winter term, contact me-grad-application@umich.edu office to request a paper application to submit a Ph.D. application.
  • Application Fee:  $10 application fee.
    • When filling out the online application, make sure to answer the question properly that asks if you are currently enrolled in a Rackham program in order to pay the $10 application fee. If you answer it incorrectly the application fee will show as $75 U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident or $90 for international student.  Please note that once you pay the application fee, there is no reimbursement if you paid the higher amount by mistake.
