SI Engine Friction Tests

Abstract:
This work is being done to analyze the effect of oil formulation, VI improvers, and modifiers on friction performance in a modern low friction engine. Also, to study and analyze the cold start friction response over a matrix of engine operating conditions.

Goals of the work:
To find a blend of oil that will consititue a "Global Mobil One" and reduce overall engine friction. To optimize the spark timing map based on transient friction characteristics during start up.

Accomplishments:
Steady state friction tests were conducted over a standardized speed-load trace and transient friction tests during engine warm-up from sub-zero conditions.
