GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE EGL HONORS PROGRAM

The Engineering Global Leadership Honors Program (EGL) combines a traditional engineering curriculum with courses in the School of Business Administration, and LS&A. EGL leads to two degrees: a Bachelor of Science and a Masters degree in Engineering.

The EGL Honors program produces students capable of communicating across the engineering and business boundary of operating comfortably in another culture. The history of EGL graduates confirms that this background is in high demand and commands appreciable premiums in pay and advancement.

Current EGL program tracks

EGL students currently pursue degrees in a number of program tracks, including: BSE IOE + MEng Mfg
BSE IOE + MSE IOE
BSE IOE + MS Financial Engineering
BSE ME + MSE IOE
BSE ME + MEng Mfg

Students may pursue other program tracks as long as all EGL program requirements can be met.

EGL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

An EGL student must satisfy all requirements of his/her BSE and Masters program (see http://www.engin.umich.edu/students/bulletin.html).

In addition, the student must complete the following EGL program requirements:

  1. Cultural core:
    • 12 HU/SS credits dedicated to a particular region of the world of economic importance to the US. Regions include: Eastern Europe, Western Europe, South America, Asia, Southeast Asia. Courses pertaining to the region can cover any historical point in time.
    • Constraints: cultural core courses can include
      • at most 6 credits of 100-level foreign language courses (in a classroom setting) that are not German, French, Spanish, or Italian;
      • at most 6 advanced placement and transfer credits from domestic institutions transferred credits from study abroad in the chosen cultural core region
      • at most one general regional area course, such as International Economics,
    • Study abroad: up to 3 of the 12 credits of the cultural core may be waived if the student is study abroad, in the chosen cultural core region, results in these credits being transferred back to the UM
    • [under consideration] Work abroad: up to 3 credits of the 12 hour cultural core may be waived if the student works abroad, in the chosen cultural core region,Ý for an appreciable length of time (to be determined).
  2. Total HU/SS credits: Currently EGL requires that a student have either 20 (ME EGL) or 24 (IOE EGL) of HU/SS credits, not including those used to satisfy the foreign language requirement. A relaxation of this requirement currently is being considered.
  3. Foreign Language: Two semesters of the same 2nd year language (e.g., not one semester of 2nd year French and one semester of 2nd year German) related to the chosen cultural core region. This language cannot be the studentís native language. This requirement may be satisfied with aÝ placing out examination offered by the appropriate department.
  4. Business core: 12 hours of introductory undergraduate and graduate credits at the UM Business school.
  5. Synthesis course: Completion of a faculty-monitored synthesis project, or internship, that allows an opportunity to place classroom learning in an applied context. Currently acceptable synthesis examples are
    • TMI Summer Team Project
    • Capstone Design Project in the student's respective department (with prior approval)
  6. Maintenance of good standing: EGL students are required to maintain at least a 3.4 cumulative GPA and register for at least 16 credit hours per term.

ADMISSION TO EGL

  1. When to apply: Students are encouraged to apply for the program after 1-2 semesters (with grades) in the CoE (IOE students); after 16 credit hours of engineering or departmental core courses (non IOE).
  2. Application requirements:
    • a 3.55 cum GPA to apply, and to be to interviewed by the admissions
    • committee;
    • a 3.60 cum GPA by the end of the semester in which interviewed
    • to be admitted.
  3. Masters Degree portion of the program: Admission to the Master's portion of the program is not guaranteed. Students are subject to the same admissions requirements as other Masterís degree applicants. Students are asked to state an intended Master's degree in the application process in order to guide advising about undergraduate prerequisites for admission to the Master's portion of the programs.

Relation Between EGL and the Tauber Manufacturing Institute (TMI)

EGL and TMI are two separate entities. TMI is a joint academic program, involving CoE and UMBS, focused on manufacturing. Although TMI is primarily designed for MSE, MSEng and MBA students, some undergraduate EGL students have been accepted into TMI. Since TMI sets its admissions requirements on a term-by- term basis, EGL students interested in TMI are encouraged to state this interest during the EGL admission process so that, upon acceptance into EGL, their names can be forwarded to TMI and their subsequent course counseling is appropriate to meet TMIís requirements.
