Pass/Fail Rules in the Engineering Bulletin
Commonly asked questions about the P/F option
- How does this option work?
Instructors do not know that you have elected a class as P/F
They report the grades as usual, "A+" through "E"
After receiving the grade, the Registrar's office translates grades as follows:
"A+" through "C-" = "P" (pass)
"D+" through "E" = "F" (fail)
- How long do I have between choosing to take a class for a grade or as P/F?
This must be done before the "Drop/Add" deadline. i.e. within the first nine weeks of the semester, or within the first four and one half weeks of a half term. No change in election can be made after this time. You may reverse P/F back to a letter grade within the deadline period.
- Can I take my Introduction to Engineering (Engin. 100) or Advanced Math course P/F?
No. These are both required classes and do not count for HUM/SS or Free Elective Credit.
- Can I take my Economics class or my HUM/SS Sequence class P/F?
Yes. These are both considered elective courses in Humanities and Social Sciences.
- What happens if I exceed the limitations on the number of pass/fail courses?
Courses elected pass/fail which exceed the stated limitations will not be applied in any way to a degree program.
- Do classes taken on a P/F basis affect my GPA?
No. They do not generate honor points, thus cannot be calculated.
- Am I still eligible for the Dean's Honor List this semester if I take a class P/F?
Yes, provided (i) you have a minimum of 12 credit hours elected for a grade, and (ii) you obtain an grade point average of 3.5 or better in these graded credits.
