Transfer of Credit from Other Institutions

Non-engineering classes

Approval to transfer credit for these classes is fairly straight-forward. If the classes have been approved at the College level, then they will automatically be approved for credit towards the ME program. (Advanced maths is excluded from this category.)

Advanced maths and 200-level ME classes

These classes can be transferred from other institutions. Often, a list of pre-approved classes will be available from the office of Transfer & Admissions (1410 Lurie) in the College. If the syllabus has not been previously approved by the department, you must get it approved by submitting a detailed syllabus (not a brief description in a catalogue) to the ME Undergraduate Committee.

This request should be submitted long enough in advance for the class to be evaluated.

Upper level ME classes

In general, it is expected that upper-level technical classes (ME3xx & ME4xx) will always be taken at UM (Ann Arbor). Therefore, transfer of upper-level technical credit from another institution will not generally be granted.

If a student feels that there are exceptional circumstances that may justify the transfer of a class, a petition can be submitted to the ME Undergraduate Program Committee. This petition must include the following information:

This petition should be submitted in a timely fashion before the class is taken.

N.B. Transfer of all 300-level (and higher) technical credit must be approved by the ME Program Advisor before it can count towards the ME degree. This includes classes that may be identified "pre-approved" at the college level. In particular, it should be noted that just because a class has previously been approved does not mean that a student can automatically apply it to his or her degree without any reference to the ME Program Advisor.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I take classes from a community college for transfer credit?

As long as the classes follow the rules above and the course is approved by the college, students are able to take courses from any higher level institution.

Can I take transfer courses past my junior year?

You must take 30 of your last 36 credits for your degree here at the University. It is possible to transfer up to six credits in at this point, but as stated above it is very difficult to transfer anything except for HU/SS or free electives.
