THE
DEPARTMENT
OF
MECHANICAL
ENGINEERING
AND
APPLIED
MECHANICS
at the University of Michigan offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Science in
Engineering (M.S.E.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Mechanical
Engineering and in Applied Mechanics.
Interdepartmental degree programs entailing a single M.S.E. in two disciplines
(for example, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture) and Dual Degree
programs involving two distinct degrees may be arranged with the Department on
an individual basis. These degree programs are subject to the policies of the
Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies. | |

GRADUATE STUDENTS IN THE
MECHANICAL
ENGINEERING MASTER'S PROGRAM
may choose one of three options to fulfill degree requirements: the traditional
coursework option, the master's thesis option, and the research option. A minimum of 30 credit hours
is required in all three options.
Requirements of the coursework option are:
- 18 credits in Mechanical Engineering courses, 12 of them at the 500
level and above;
- 6 credits of advanced mathematics courses;
- 6 additional credits elected in Mechanical Engineering or as cognate
courses as approved by the Graduate Advisor.
The thesis option is available for students who desire to
include research experience as part of their graduate program. A thesis
committee (at least one MEAM faculty) and a final thesis report are required. |
