Financial Assistance
MEAM graduate students are able to take advantage of a variety of
opportunities for financial support.
All recipients of financial aid from the MEAM Department are required to be
involved in departmental research activities with a faculty advisor. Students
earn graduate credits for their research work.
When awarding financial aid, strong
preference is given to doctoral and PhD-bound master's students. However,
limited suport is also available to the students who only seek master's
degrees.
Three primary forms of financial aid are
available:
Fellowships. These are made possible by the U-M
and/or industry endowments and grants.
Research Assitantship (RA)
Appointments.
Graduate students work with one or several faculty members on a sponsored research
project. Incoming graduate students are encouraged to contact faculty
directly about possible positions.
Graduate Student Instructor (GSI)
Appointments. The
MEAM Department awards numerous GSI appointments in undegraduate courses
to well-qualified incoming graduate students. (Foreign students must
pass the English Language Institute (ELI) test for non-native
English-speaking students before receiving a GSI appointment.)
Grduate students may receive offers combining
two of these three forms of aid. A typical financial aid package
includes full tuition and fees, a monthly stipend of $1,400, and
participation in the U-M's group health insurance programs. It may also
include travel funds to attend technical conferences.
For financial aid consideration, students
must indicate their interest on their application and submit their
completed application by January 15. The MEAM Department adheres to the
policy of the Council of Graduate Schools, which allows prospective
students until April 15, to respond to financial aid offers.

Academic Services Office (ASO) by phone or e-mail as listed on page
