Dear Prospective Graduate Student

As you will soon discover, this is a very exciting time for the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics (MEAM) at the University of Michigan (U-M).
While the University of Michigan has been a leader in mechanical engineering for decades, we have undergone tremendous growth and development the past five years. We have added new faculty, nearly tripled our research funding, and strengthened our partnerships with government and industry.
And these efforts are paying off. Our Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programs were ranked #4 in the country by U.S. News and World Report in both 1996 and 1997. In fact, the College of Engineering (CoE) as a whole is consistently ranked in the top 10.
Most importantly, we are putting these improvements to work for our graduate students. In the MEAM graduate program, you will find a unique blend of inspiring coursework, hands-on, probing research, and meaningful application. And you will be directed in your studies by world-renowned faculty members who are leaders in their fields--and authors of many of the textbooks you will be using.
Through our well-balanced, interdisciplinary approach to research and learning, we are preparing some of the best master's and doctoral students in the country for excellent positions in industry and higher education. In fact, many of our students get a head start on their careers while pursuing their degrees through such job opportunities as summer internships.

Sincerely,

Christophe Pierre
Graduate Programs Chair
Associate Chair, MEAM
