Staff Excellence Recognized at ME

Steve Erskine and Professor Yoram Koren

Once again, a member of the ME staff has been recognized for exceptional service to the College of Engineering. In May 2005, Technical Services Supervisor Steve Erskine received an Excellence in Staff Service Award from former College of Engineering Dean Steven Director.

CoE’s Excellence in Staff Service Award Program was established as part of a comprehensive initiative to recognize the vital contributions that staff make to the College’s success and prominence as one of the nation’s premier engineering institutions. Recipients of the College’s Excellence in Staff Service Awards are chosen on the basis of their exemplary work and/or special achievements and receive both a cash award and a citation.

Erskine has been a member of the ME staff for over 21 years, and had previously been recognized with an Engineering Research Center Staff Award.

In making the presentation, Director noted that Erskine has ensured the steady functioning of the NSF Engineering Research Center for Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems through his exceptional problem-solving and interpersonal skills and his willingness to take initiative. He cited the time Erskine coordinated the disassembly, transportation and reassembly of the ERC's Reconfigurable Machine Tool for demonstration at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago. This was no small feat considering that this machine is 12 1/2 feet tall and weighs an estimated 12,000 lbs.

Director also quoted one of Erskine’s colleagues who, in supporting the nomination, said, “Perhaps most importantly, he has served to facilitate the collaboration between industry, faculty and students, something that can only be accomplished by someone who is highly respected.”

Erskine remained characteristically modest about the award. “It was an unexpected surprise,” he said. “I thought it must be a mistake.”
