    40's

Robert B. Dillaway (BSE '45), chairman of Potomac Interface, Inc., in Arlington, VA, writes that attending the Automotive Research Center Annual Conference in May brought back many memories: "While at the U-M, I carried out part time testing for O.W. Boston on machinability of silicon steels and got to know him and Les Coldwell very well. I also did dynamic seal testing for Professor Haggerty in AP and was a student assistant for Professor Nickerson and Professor Frank Schwartz Frank and I carried on a lasting relationship even after his move to Florida until he died. Professor Clay Porter, a fraternity brother, got me to go to Carrier Corp. where I helped develop the first window air conditioner after the war. I took courses from Vincent and Lay. Vincent was a great teacher and I kept in touch until he died."

    50s

John T. Howe (BSE ME '50) retired this year as chief scientist with the NASA Ames Research Center at the Moffett Federal Air Station in California. He now is a consultant in hypervelocity flight, ocean, and wetland issues.

    60s

MEAM's new External Advisory Board (EAB) Chair Gene DeFouw (BSE ME '69) is an active member of the Engineering Alumni Society Mentoring Network, which pairs alumni-mentors with mentor-seeking students. He attended last Fall's Alumni Society Mentoring Dinner, which brought alumni-mentors and students together for face-to-face communications.

Marvin F. DeVries (BSE ME '60, MSE '61), a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Mechanical Engineering, received the 1998 Education Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). He was also elected vice president of CIRP, the International Institution for Production Engineering Research.

Ali Erkan Engin (MSE '66, PhD '68) was recently named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). His pioneering work on head injury modeling at the U-M's Highway Safety Institute is internationally known as the first major contribution in this field since 1950. Engin is currently chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Alabama. In 1985 he was honored with the Borelli Award of the American Society of Biomechanics.

    70s

Shyam Bahadur (PhD '70) was recently named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is a well-known expert in friction and wear of materials, with an academic career that has spanned 27 years. He has made steady contributions to upgrading the engineering curriculum at Iowa State University.

    90s

Traci K. (Bozich) Cavendish (BSE ME '96) married Matthew Cavendish, a third-year student at the U-M Dental School, on May 16, 1998. She works as an engineer in Product Development at Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn.

Corey J. Gannon (BSE ME '93) recently completed a 39-month tour on the USS South Carolina (CGN-37) where he served as the reactor electrical division officer, auxiliaries officer, and assistant engineer. He qualified as a nuclear engineering officer in March. He is currently serving a two-year tour as an engineering instructor at Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, RI.

Leonard Pomrehn (PhD '93) and Suzanne (Freel) Pomrehn, a former MEAM staff member, are the proud parents of Paul Robert, born May 27, 1998. He weighed 8 lbs., 3 oz., and was 22 inches long. Hugo Pomrehn (EAB) is the proud grandfather.

John L. Robinson (BSE ME '93) and his wife, Dorene, welcomed Joseph Michael, born May 31, 1998. He weighed 8 lbs., 11/2 oz. and was 22 inches long.

Michelle Sanborn (BSE ME '98) began working as an associate engineer in the Structural Test Laboratory at the General Motors Proving Grounds in June.

Mark. A. Steffe (BSE ME '94), a product engineer with GM's Delphi Interior and Lighting Systems in Troy, MI, received a GM fellowship and will be attending Indiana University this fall to pursue an MBA.
    [Notes]

James M. Hardy (BSE ME '59, MSE '66) died May 22, 1998, in Moreland Hills, OH, at the age of 61. He served as a managing partner of Hardy Associates, an engineering consulting firm. He was very active in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). He was married to Nancy Colwell Hardy, daughter of the late MEAM Professor Emeritus Les Colwell.

Robert E. Simkins, Sr (BSE ME '36) died May 20, 1998, in Verona, WI, at the age of 87. He spent his entire professional career as manager and project engineer for the pulp and paper industry. He retired from Wisconsin Tissue Millis in Menasha, WI, in 1976.

We have also recently learned of the passing of the following alumnus:
    Walter Daskin (MSE '48)
