MEAM Family Sees Double—Twice!

ou see it often enough: a family with a set of twins. But how many times do you see a family with two sets of twins? Well the MEAM family has just that!
While MEAM faculty, staff, and students may think they're seeing double, it's really undergraduates Jaclyn and Jamie Lossia, and Janet and John Swanson.
Janet and John, who are seniors, and Jackie and Jamie, who are juniors, get some extra attention in MEAM as twins, but they've learned to take it in stride.
"Our parents were huge on raising us as individuals, so it's funny that people think it's a big deal," says Jamie. "But we don't mind—although we do get a lot of really bad twin jokes!"

All four are enjoying their MEAM experience—and are glad to be going through it with their twin. In fact, each set of twins takes all their classes together. "It's great. We have a built-in study partner," says Jackie. "And we push each other. We're competitive with each other, but in a good way."
Although John and Janet, who are from Northville, MI, and Jackie and Jamie, from Farmington, MI, shared a strong interest in math and science in high school, each of their decisions to attend the University of Michigan—and go into engineering—were made individually.
"We've had a really good experience here," says John. "There is a camaraderie within the Department that we've really liked. You are with a group of students at your level who move with you. I will miss that when I graduate."
