Mike Korybalski poses in front of the Michigan Theater during Mechanical Dynamics' January 1999 company kickoff event. Each January, the company held a week-long event in Ann Arbor for employees from offices around the world to hear from management about the company's goals and objectives for the new year, as well as to participate in training on new products and sales. The week always included one fun day for employees. The 1999 event was a show at the Michigan Theater, complete with tuxedoes, video commericals produced by different departments, and awards.

Awards generally reflect the recognition of outstanding achievement. This year's recipient of the ME Alumni Association Award, Michael Korybalski, clearly meets that standard. He was recognized for both his outstanding professional achievements and his contributions to the ME department.
Korybalski, who earned a BSME (1969), a MSEME (1972), and a MBA (1980), all from U-M, was a co-founder of Mechanical Dynamics, Inc. (MDI), an Ann Arbor-based software company. While an undergraduate in ME, Korybalski studied under former professor Milt Chace, who was doing seminal work in the use of computers in engineering design and development. Ultimately, Korybalski, Chace and Research Associate John Angell co-founded MDI in 1977, and the company went on to become an industry leader in visual prototyping.
Korybalski's entrepreneurial style and accomplishments have been recognized before this latest honor. He received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the New Enterprise Forum in 1994 and was a finalist for Inc. magazine's Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
The Alumni Association Award also reflects a recognition of, and appreciation for, Korybalski's ongoing contributions to ME. He's third chair of the External Advisory Board and a member of the National Advisory Council for the College of Engineering.
For all he's accomplished, and for all he's contributed, thanks and congratulations to the 2002 ME Alumni Association Award winner, Michael Korybalski.
