Wilson Student Team Project Center, speaks at its dedication
ceremony. Inset: The Center is named for the late Walter
E. Wilson (BSE ME '33), founder of W.E. Wilson Co., a
chemical distributor. His generous gift to the CoE has made
a lasting contribution to the transformation of students into
practicing engineers. The dedication plaque shown here is
in the vestibule of the Center. MEAM alumni Charles S.
Hutchins (BSE ME '57), co-founder and chairman, Manufacturing
Data Systems, and Timothy D. Leuliette (BSE ME '71, MBA
'76), vice chairman, Detroit Diesel Corp., and president,
chief operating officer, and director, Penske Corp., were
featured speakers at the dedication ceremony.

MEAM External Advisory Board (EAB) member Roger L. McCarthy,
PhD, PE (AB '72, BSE ME '72), chairman of the board,
Exponent Failure Analysis Associates, Inc., presented "Loss
of the Titanic: Bad Luck? Bad Judgement? Bad Steel?" at MEAM
in October.

Baxter Webb (BSE ME '36), who turned 83 this year, is
enjoying retirement with his wife, Rosalie, at Botsford Commons
in Farmington Hills, MI. They have eight great-grandchildren.
50s
Paul Connell (BSE ME ENG '56) recently made a $1 million
gift to the Department of Biology in the U-M College of Literature,
Science and the Arts (LS&A) in honor of his late wife, Priscilla
Harrison Connell. It is the largest gift in the Department's
history and will be used to establish an endowment fund. After
Mr. Connell completed his mechanical engineering degree in
1956, the family moved to Ohio where he worked as an engineer
and taught high school in the Cincinnati area.
Raymond J. Symons (BS ME '52) is retired from his
position as resident division manager for Pontiac Engineering
at the GM Desert Proving Ground in AZ. He received his pilot's
license in 1963, owned several airplanes, and obtained commercial,
flight instructor, and instrument flight instructor ratings
when he retired. He's no longer teaching, but still flies
for fun, and is enjoying his three children, nine grandchildren,
and first great-grandchild. He also played clarinet in the
Pontiac Symphony for 23 years.
Edward W. Watkins (BSE ME '55), a retired auto mechanics
high school teacher in Milan, MI, was recently featured in
the Ann Arbor News. He served in World War II as a Tuskegee
Airman and eventually became a major in the U.S. Air Force.
He and his wife, Henrietta, have been married for nearly 50
years and have one son, Robbie. Watkins served for 21 years
as a trustee on the London Township Board.
60s
Donald Brinkman (BSE ME '60) recently retired from
the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission where he served as a
senior project manager. He now lives in Cody, WY, enjoying
the Rocky Mountains.

David Stuart Cameron (BSE ME '78, MSE '80) is the proud
father of Jonathon Herbert Cameron, named in honor of Herbert
Abrams (BSE ME '53). In May, David graduated from Oakland
University with a Master's Degree and a PhD in Systems Engineering.
He writes: "This was indeed a busy and momentous Spring season."

J. Bryan Downey (BSE ME '73, MSE '73) was recently named
a principal in Austin Consulting, a division of The Austin
Co., a management-owned, international consulting, architectural,
engineering, and construction firm. He is leading Austin Consulting's
Manufacturing practice, in Schaumburg, IL.
Allen Kovacs (BSE ME '72) currently serves as a senior
technical specialist at Lemforder Corporation in Plymouth,
MI, and as an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering
at the University of Detroit-Mercy, where he teaches vehicle
dynamics. He received his PhD from Wayne State University
in 1995 at the age of 46. He says it pays to "never give up."
H.J. "Mitch" Mitchell (MSE '77), writes that he is
a brigadier general in the US Air Force and serves as the
National Security Space Architect.

80s
Peter Gable (BSE ME '86) and his new wife, Krista,
spent their honeymoon in Europe. He was recently promoted
to purchasing specialist for Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn, MI.
He procures machinery and tooling for all North American power-train facilities.
Philip Schuchter (BSE ME '82), a business development
manager for K & M Engineering and Consulting, develops power
plants in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. He recently
returned to Washington, DC, after living in the Philippines
for a year. He recommends living overseas as a "great exposure
and living experience." He and his wife have a new son, Grant
Wells.
90s
Christopher T. Hackett (BSE ME '92) joined DaimlerChrysler's
Small Car Platform in June as a dimensional control engineer
after working as a Dimensional Management consultant with
General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co., and Chrysler Corp. for
six years. He and wife, Michelle, have two children, Rachel
and Benjamin. He presented the paper, "Achieving Acceptable
Cp and Cpk Values in Sheetmetal Stampings," at the 1999 International
Body Engineering Conference.
