Associate Professor Ellen M. Arruda presented, "Micromechanics of Meso-Scale Modeling and Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Polymers," at Nano and Micromechanics of Solids for Emerging Science and Technology, a workshop sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Brown University in Palo Alto, CA. She also attended a Society of Engineering Science (SES) meeting in Austin, TX, where graduate student Wei Xu presented the paper, "Finite Deformation and Texture of Alpha and Beta Crystalline Polypropylene," on which she is a coauthor. Arruda is a member of the SES board of directors.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Michael Thouless, and his wife, Yi-Li Wu, on the newest member of their family. Rachel, born on October 13, 1998, in Changsha, Hunan Province, PRC, joined them on August 16.

Arthur F. Thurnau Professor Dionissios (Dennis) N. Assanis was the lead organizer of the 1999 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Division Fall meeting, which was hosted by MEAM's Automotive Research Center (ARC) and the U-M. Other major organizers included Betty Alperovitz, academic secretary III, Bruno Vanzielehem, MEAM PhD candidate, and Judith Brown, research secretary IV. The conference's featured speaker was Dr. Thomas Asmus, of DaimlerChrysler, who gave the Soichiro Honda Lecture. Assanis, Assistant Research Scientist Zoran Filipi, and graduate student Scott Fiveland presented, "A Predictive Ignition Delay Correlation Under Steady State and Transient Operation of a Direct Injection Diesel Engine."

Professor James R. Barber gave an invited lecture at the Third International Congress on Thermal Stresses in Cracow, Poland. He was also a member of the NSF Site Visit Team for the Engineering Research Center on Advanced Friction Studies at Southern Illinois University.

Professor Maria Comninou served as a judge for the 76th Annual Henry M. Campbell Moot Court Competition at the U-M Law School. The questions briefed and argued by the competitors were: Does the Child Online Protection Act violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution? Does a warrantless interception of electronic mail by a federal law enforcement official violate the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution?

Assistant Professor Arthur D. Kuo now has joint appointments as assistant professor with the Department of Biomedical Engineering and as faculty associate with the Institute of Gerontology.

The rights to use patents developed by Robert H. Lurie Professor of Engineering Jyotirmoy (Jyoti) Mazumder were purchased by Precision Optical Manufacturing of Plymouth, MI. The process uses lasers to fuse powdered metal into dies and molds used by US manufacturers to make metal and plastic parts. He also was the lead organizer of the Center for Laser Aided Intelligent Manufacturing's (CLAIM) Laser Science and Engineering Lecture, which was presented by 1981 Physics Nobel Laureate, Nicolaas Bloembergen, of Harvard University.

Professor Jun Ni hosted the S.M. Wu Lecture in Manufacturing Science in Tokyo, which featured guest speaker Professor Toshio Sata, vice president, Toyota Technical Institute.

Professor Noel C. Perkins gave an invited lecture entitled, "Nonlinear Cable Dynamics and Role of Internal Resonances," at the Third International Symposium on Cable Dynamics in Trondheim, Norway. He also served on the Symposium's International Advisory Committee.

MEAM Chair and William Clay Ford Professor of Manufacturing A. Galip Ulsoy made a presentation on reconfigurable machining systems at Jervis B.Webb Co. in New Hudson, MI.

Congratulations to:

Research Scientist James A. Ashton-Miller, who was named president-elect of the American Society of Bio-mechanics (ASB).

Associate Professor S. Jack Hu and Professor Noel C. Perkins, who received 199899 MEAM Outstanding Accomplishment Awards. Hu was recognized for his outstanding contributions to research and Perkins for his outstanding achievements in research, teaching, and service.

Associate Professor Gregory M. Hulbert, who was recently elected a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). An ASME member is named a fellow when he or she has at least 10 years active engineering practice and has made significant contributions to the field.

Associate Professor Volker Sick, who received the Forest R. McFarland Award by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Engineering Meetings Board (EMB) to recognize his outstanding service to the SAE and EMB, especially in the EMB's Fuels and Lubricants Activity.

Assistant Professor Margaret S. Wooldridge, who received the 1999 Pi Tau Sigma (˝T(sum)/PTS) Gold Medal, which recognizes outstanding achievement by an engineering graduate in mechanical engineering within 10 years of earning an undergraduate degree.

Four MEAM faculty members, who were recently honored by the CoE. They are: Arthur F. Thurnau Professor Dennis N. Assanis, who received the Teaching Excellence Award; Assistant Research Scientist Darius (Darek) Ceglarek (PhD '94), Research Scientist Achievement Award; Assistant Professor Ann Marie Sastry, 1938E Award; and Professor Grétar Tryggvason, Service Excellence Award.

    In Memoriam
Professor Emeritus Hadley J. Smith (BSE ME '40, PhD '57) died November 14, 1999, in Ann Arbor, MI, at the age of 81. He served on the MEAM faculty for 30 years, retiring in 1985. His primary research areas included fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and dynamics. His avid research activities were highly published and supported by NASA and the Army's Land Locomotion Laboratory. He served at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory as a Harvard University fellow sponsored by the NSF. Professor Smith also actively served the University and CoE. He was a member of the committee that developed the Dearborn Campus. He is survived by his wife, Maureen, and their six children.
