t's not just the free pizza and pop that attract more than 50 MEAM students and faculty to the weekly lunch meetings of the University of Michigan (U-M) chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) each Wednesday.
At the meetings, students are exposed to career opportunities by speakers who represent a wide range of companies and industries, including Procter & Gamble, FANUC Robotics, Lockheed- Martin, Mechanical Dynamics, Inc., and Holman, Inc. These contacts often lead to internships, even to permanent positions.
It's all part of ASME's overall goal to advance the practice of mechanical engineering and to help students learn about, prepare for, and find a career. To do this, ASME works closely with students as well as takes part in many other professional and social activities. Some of these include:
Plant tours to expose students to industry and expand their knowledge of the engineering world.
Social events for ASME members to get better acquainted with fellow students, including Engineering Week volleyball. ASME also hosts fun faculty/staff/student breakfasts in which faculty and staff prepare food and serve the students.
Participation in Tech Day, a College of Engineering (CoE) event for high school students to learn about engineering and the U-M.

MEAM alumni Hilary Wilson (BSE ME '98, left) and Oreste Prada (BSE ME '97) renewed their friendship when they served as guest speakers at an ASME meeting this fall. They discovered they both work at Procter & Gamble during their visit to MEAM! Wilson is a technical engineer in Product Supply and was active in the UMME and the MESLB while at MEAM. Prada works in research and design of new products and was active in the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), SMES, and the Cuban American Student Association (CASA). Directly above: MEAM alumna Marianne Stokes (BSE ME '84, MBA '89), director of marketing for FANUC Robotics, spoke at a fall ASME meeting.

The ASME local chapter also participates in ASME regional and national conferences and events, which include both professional and recreational activities. A Diversity Action Grant to ASME International encourages students of all backgrounds to embark upon careers in mechanical engineering.
A new ASME Web-based career resource center where students can post their resumes for recruiters to view or to follow-up on jobs posted at ASME's web site.
