Student Notes
PhD candidate Jianmin Gu presented a paper, at the
Fifth U.S. National Congress on Computational Mechanics in
Boulder, CO. In addition to a Rackham Travel Grant Award,
he also received a U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics
(USACM) Stipend Scholarship to help defray travel expenses
to the Congress. He also had a paper accepted for publication
in Finite Elements in Analysis and Design. coauthored with
Professor Wen-Hwa Shyu (PhD '96) at Chang Jung Christian
University in Taiwan, MEAM Associate Professor Gregory
Hulbert, and Associate Research Scientist Zheng-Dong
Ma.

Undergraduate
student, Anastasios (John) Hart, received the Garland
Duncan Scholarship from the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME). The award honors a junior or senior for
academic achievement.
MEAM
undergraduate Ekenem Isichei was the overall winner
of the 1999 Paper Airplane Contest sponsored by the U-M Department
of Aerospace Engineering. He perfected a design during ME
240 Introduction to Dynamics and Vibrations, taught by Professor
Noel C. Perkins, and later entered it in the contest.

Undergraduate
students Joseph Klamo and Aleta Sutterfield
are the recipients of 1999 Dow Scholarships, which recognize
academic excellence and leadership qualities.
Undergraduate
student, Vinay D'Souza, was selected to receive the
John and Elsa Gracik Scholarship by the Board on Engineering
Education of ASME International for academic excellence.
