After successfully recruiting some of the top graduate students in the country, MEAM continued to emphasize their importance to the Department by holding a Graduate Student Orientation and an informal follow-up "Q and A with the Graduate Chair" in September.
Attended by more than 150 graduate students and faculty, the orientation followed a Prospective Graduate Student Recruitment Weekend in the Spring. These efforts are part of MEAM's aggressive new recruitment plan to attract and keep very high caliber doctoral and master's students.
The orientation focused on the people in MEAM who are available to help graduate students. Much of the information that students learned at the orientation is worth repeating, so here are some helpful reminders:
Professor Christophe Pierre, MEAM graduate program chair, has open office hours on Mondays, from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m., in his office in the Academic Services Office (ASO) in 2206 G.G. Brown. Or, you may reach him any time on e-mail at pierre@umich.edu.
Cynthia Quann-White, administrative assistant for the graduate program, is available to help with nearly all aspects of graduate education, including financial aid and degree program information. Feel free to see her in the ASO, call her at 763-9223, or e-mail cynthiaq@umich.edu.
Need training before you teach a lab? Then call Robert Coury, supervisor of the Design/Manufacturing Laboratory and Student Machine Shop. His phone is 936-0335 and his office is 1103 G.G. Brown.
Administrative Assistant Laura Vespaziani can help sort through personnel matters such as research assistantship appointments and benefits. Call her at 764-3530 or stop by her office in 2216 G.G. Brown.
If you're interested in graduate student news and information, you should join the GRIME e-mail group. GRIME (Graduates In Mechanical Engineering) is an informal student organization that strives to improve graduate student life. GRIME's e-mail group is used to announce industry and academic jobs, financial aid opportunities, course offerings, and other MEAM news. Instructions for joining the GRIME e-mail group are given on GRIME's homepage. Or, contact Julie Reyer at reyer@engin.umich.edu or Anne Marsan at amarsan@engin.umich.edu.
