Dan Apley, Pei-Kuang (Jesse) Chen, Shuxin Gu, Boon-Wei Shiu, and Fugee Tsung
received the 1997 "Thinker" awards presented to recent PhD graduates of WuMRC at
the NSF I/UCRC summer picnic.
The 1997-98 Robert Caddell Memorial Awards were awarded to Robert W. Brown
for the Undergraduate Scholarship and Yenkai Wang for the Graduate Student Research
Achievement Award. Amy Van Loon, Jonathan Opdyke, and Jairam Manjunathaiah received
honorable mentions.
Richard Hofer, a senior in MEAM/Aero, was named Outstanding Aerospace Engineering
Student for 1996-97. He received the merit-based AIAA Foundation/GE Aircraft
Engines Undergraduate Scholarship and MSPE Undesignated Junior/Senior Grant. He attended
the Undergraduate Summer Institute in Applied Science at Laurence Livermore National
Laboratory sponsored by the Hertz Foundation. While there, he co-authored and presented
the poster, "Visualization of Wave-Particle Resonances."

PhD student Hyung Min Kim presented the paper, "Geometric Form Evaluation of Cone Based
on the Minimum Zone Criteria" at the ASPE annual meeting in Norfolk, VA, in October. The
paper, also in the conference proceedings, was co-authored by B.C. Lee, Kim's thesis advisor
at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).
Nader Shwayhat, a sophomore in the ME/Aero dual major program, took part in General Motor's
1997 Design Center Internship Program last summer, which consisted of six teams of three
students each. He was a member of the Chevrolet team which developed models, technical
drawings, and sketches that were then presented to GM executives and design staff and
displayed at the Warren Tech Center this past fall. The models will be displayed at the 1999
Detroit Auto Show.
