[Students Leap into Engineering 100]

[Photo - Engineering 100] CoE freshmen are jumping for joy about what they’re learning in Engineering 100 Introduction to Engineering, a newly required course that gives an overview of the engineering professions as well as emphasizes technical communication skills and a team-oriented engineering project. Fall ’98 student teams in one section designed and built mechanical frogs, then tested them for range, accuracy, and aesthetics during the culminating competition, “Flying Frogs: Engineering Mechanics and Design.” The course was taught by Dr. Laurel Ericksen of the Technical Communication Program and MEAM Associate Professor Noel Perkins, shown here. Other faculty participating in this section included Professor N. Steneck (History) and A. Crawford (IOE). Ten MEAM students helped evaluate the educational merit of each design prior to Competition Day.
