Things To Do Over The Summer

  1. Register For Classes:

    • You will be receiving a one-time identifier by e-mail from the Rackham offices, which will allow you to create a uniqname (user ID) and password for your computer account.

    • Once you have a uniqname and password, you will be able to register for classes. You can go ahead and register for classes over the summer. You can also drop and add classes very easily, so if you change your mind about what you want to take this will not be a problem. For Registration information, go to Wolverine Access click on Student Business (Register online for classes, see grades, billing information, order transcripts, etc.).

    • The complete schedule of classes for the Fall 2007 term is available online.

    • Be sure to be registered for classes before the first day of class or you will receive a late registration fee. You can drop and add your classes during the first 3 weeks of the term, so you should have some time to come to campus, meet with your faculty guides, and change your schedule around if you wish to. Changing your schedule too much after the first week of classes isn't recommended, however, as you might have a hard time catching up with the class.

  2. Get Housing:

    • In order to help you connect with other incoming students in the Fall, a complete list of all student names with e-mail addresses will be e-mailed to all new students by early June. If you do NOT wish to be included in this list, PLEASE let Simmi Isaac know! You may e-mail her at: sdisaac@umich.edu.

    • If you are looking for a roommate, use this list of incoming students. Perhaps you can find another incoming ME student to room with.

    • In general, students either live in apartment complexes near North Campus, or in houses converted into apartments near Central Campus. This housing map will help you find the appropriate area for you.
      • Off campus housing ads (this is how many students find housing. Click on the housing listings and create a profile for details)
      • Graduate/Family Housing
      • The Michigan Daily is our campus newspaper, and it has a lot of great ads for off campus housing - just click on Classifieds. Once in the classifieds listings, you might have to hit "more" to get the full list.
      • Spectrum Apartment Search is a free service that can help place you into an apartment complex. 1-800-732-1357.

    • Those who live on Central Campus tend to live mostly in area 2, but also possibly in areas 4, 5, and 6. The main UM bus stop to North Campus is on the Northeast border between areas 2 and 5. The UM busses are very reliable, free, and run every 10-15 minutes back and forth from Central to North Campus.

    • Those who live on North Campus, typically live in area 12, and possibly a little bit in area 11 and 13. North Campus is in Area 12 and 13. Many houses and apartment complexes are within a 10-20 minute walk to campus. Also, many are near Ann Arbor (AATA) The Ride Bus stops. Check out the AATA bus schedule. Or you might just want to ask your landlord if there is a bus stop nearby, and what bus run it is. The Ride is a free service to all persons who can show an M-Card (UM ID).

    • Lastly, here is a list of common apartment complexes that many ME students live in. They are pretty expensive for singles, but 2 or 3 room apartments aren't too bad. Most of these places are about a 15-20 minute walk to campus (Greenbrier may be a little bit more). You should ask each one how far to walk to North Campus and if there are any bus stops near you.

  3. Communicate With Your E-mail Peer Mentor

    • Each incoming student will be assigned an E-mail Peer Mentor, a current student in the ME Department. Please feel free to correspond with this person who will be a valuable resource of information.

  4. Learn about the University Health Service, and the required forms that you must complete and turn in to them at least 30 days before classes start at: http://www.uhs.umich.edu/students/index.html
