Graduate Studies
Dear Graduate Student:
Greetings from Michigan! I'm writing to welcome you to the University of Michigan for the Fall of 2007. We are pleased that you have chosen the University of Michigan for your graduate studies.
Our graduate program has been ranked #5 in the nation by US News and World Report among 164 Universities with doctoral programs in Mechanical Engineering. ME at Michigan is a graduate program on the move. During the past five years, we've added many new faculty members, nearly tripled our research funding, and strengthened our partnerships with government and industry. Our interdisciplinary approach to research and learning strikes a unique balance of challenging course work, trend-setting research, and real-life application. At ME, we're assembling some of the finest young graduate talent in the country. Each year, we admit very high caliber students, and we are pleased to extend this welcome to you!
What follows is information to prepare you to enroll in the Fall. I would encourage you to print it out and save it for future referencing or bookmark this web site! Students in the Mechanical Engineering Department are expected to take primary responsibility for informing themselves of the regulations and policies governing financial aid, and degree and course requirements by consulting the Rackham Handbook of Policies and Procedures.
Please know that if you arrive early in the month of August, we strongly encourage you to stop into 2211 GG Brown 3:00-4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 23rd or Friday, August 24th.
- 3:00-3:30 p.m.: MSE Program Information (Simmi Isaac)
- 3:30-4:00 p.m.: Direct PhD and PhD Program Information (Cynthia Quann-White)
Pre-Orientation Check-In Times and Agenda:
***Please note that you are a Direct PhD student if you have been admitted directly into the PhD program but you do not yet have a Master's Degree.***
***Please also note that all new PhD students must attend the Informational Session on Friday, September 7th from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. in the Johnson Rooms, Lurie Engineering Center with the Graduate Chair, Professor Karl Grosh.***
All incoming students in the graduate program will be assigned a "faculty guide." The assignment is made on the basis of the availability of the faculty, their research interests and your interests. Don't limit yourself, however, from seeking the advice of any of our other faculty throughout the department. The individual whose advice you are seeking does not necessarily have to be your permanent faculty guide or academic advisor. You also will be assigned an "E-Mail Peer Mentor Guide," a current student with whom you may correspond throughout the summer.
On behalf of Professor Karl Grosh, Graduate Program Chair, Cynthia Quann-White, Graduate Student Administrator, and Michele Mahler, Graduate Program Associate, I wish you a great summer and look forward to meeting you in the Fall!
Sincerely,
Simmi Isaac
Graduate Admissions and Program Coordinator
