Applying to the University of Michigan

Incoming freshman students apply for admission to the University of Michigan College of Engineering and not to a specific major. Once a student has been accepted into the College, they choose a major during the declaration process. When applying for admission to the College of Engineering, the counselors take into accounts some of the following factors:

The University of Michigan College of Engineering enrolls about 1,000 first-year and 300 transfer undergraduate students each year.

Declaring a Major

After being admitted to the University of Michigan, students go through the degree program declaration process in either their freshman or sophomore years.

  1. Academic Requirements
A first-year student can declare an Engineering degree program during their second term in the college of Engineering, as there must be at least one term of grades recorded. Declaring a degree program depends on the student being in good scholastic standing (2.0 GPA) and having successfully completed first-year-level mathematics, chemistry, physics, computing, and Engineering 100.

  2. Advising Appointment
Once you decide on your intended major and fulfill all of the academic requirements, you are ready for an advising appointment. For Mechanical Engineering, you can stop by drop-in hours to meet with either Sue Gow, the undergraduate advisor, or the ME peer advisor, a recent graduate from the department. You can find them in the Academic Services Office, 2206 GG Brown Bldg. During this appointment, the advisor will review your academic requirements and other criteria for declaration and help you determine a plan of study. Then he or she will sign off for your declaration as a University of Michigan College of Engineering Mechanical Engineering Major.
