Research / Independent Study (ME490 / ME491)
Students interested in doing research or independent study must fill out a proposal to earn degree credit. It is expected that students will have achieved senior status and will have completed the basic core of ME courses.
The proposal and form (completed by you and approved by the instructor) must be submitted via our online form. Students who are being supervised by non-ME faculty must use a paper form, which they can obtain from the ASO office.
Upcoming deadlines are as follows:
- FA 2009: Friday, September 25, 2009, by 5 p.m.
- WN 2010: Monday, January 25, 2010, by 5 p.m.
Your proposal must be reviewed and given support by the Mechanical Engineering Program Director. While the approval process is underway, you may register for the course. Each instructor has an "Independent Study Number" that you will use as the section number when you register. Typically ME490 is the research / independent study election. However, independent study work may be conducted with faculty in other engineering departments. The registration would then be under the instructor's program. Example: ME490, AERO490, MSE490. In ALL cases the application process is required for ME students wishing to count the class as a technical elective.
ME 490 reports must be provided to the supervising faculty no later than the last day of finals week, the last day of the semester. Individual faculty may require that the reports be completed earlier.
Final reports can be submitted here: https://me-web2.engin.umich.edu/ISprojects/st/student/
