Transfer of Credit from Other Institutions

Non-Engineering Classes (Except Advanced Maths)

If the classes have been approved at the College level, then they will automatically be approved for credit towards the ME program.

Advanced Maths and 200-Level ME Classes

These classes can be transferred from other institutions. Often, a list of pre-approved classes will be available from the office of Transfer & Admissions (1410 Lurie) in the College. If the syllabus has not been previously approved by the department, you must get it approved by submitting a detailed syllabus (not a brief description in a catalogue) to the ME Undergraduate Committee.

This request should be submitted long enough in advance for the class to be evaluated.

Upper-Level ME Classes

Transfer of upper-level technical credit from another institution will not normally be granted. It is expected that these classes (ME3xx & ME4xx) will be taken at UM (Ann Arbor).

A petition for an exception can be submitted to the ME Undergraduate Program Committee, with the following information:

  • A detailed syllabus of the class in question. A description in a College Bulletin is not adequate. Enough information must be provided for the committee to understand exactly what material is being covered in the class.
  • A statement of the educational plans of the student and how, the class fits into these plans. (I.e., why do you need to take the class, and what technical electives do you plan to take?)
  • A current transcript detailing the classes that have been taken at UM and elsewhere.

This petition should be submitted in a timely fashion before the class is taken.

N.B. Transfer of all 300-level (and higher) technical credit must be approved by the ME Program Advisor before it can count towards the ME degree, including classes that may be identified "pre-approved" at the college level. Just because a class has previously been approved does not mean a student can automatically apply it to his or her degree without any reference to the ME Program Advisor.

Classes from a Community College

As long as the classes follow the rules above and the course is approved by the college, students are able to take courses from any higher level institution.
