ME PhD student Seth Norberg’s last article made the cover of the Journal of Applied Physics. In this feature article, atmospheric-pressure plasma jets (APPJs) are investigated using numerical simulations in the context of plasma medicine and biotechnology applications, as well as surface functionalization. By changing only the relative permittivity of the material upon which an APPJ is directed, significant effects on the dynamics of the discharge, production of charged and reactive species, and the behavior of the electric field are realized.

Norberg was co-advised by Professors Mark Kushner (EECS) and Eric Johnsen (ME), and received his PhD in May 2015. He is now on the Civil and Mechanical Engineering faculty at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.
