Third Edition of Barber’s Book Published

01/22/2010

ElasticityME Professor James Barber’s book Elasticity has recently been published in its third edition by Springer. The new edition features four additional chapters concerning topics such as variational methods and the use of complex-variable methods in two-dimensional elasticity. Also, the addition of new problems puts the total number of end-of-chapter problems over 300.

The first edition of Elasticity was published in 1992. It is based on a one-semester graduate course on Linear Elasticity that Barber has taught at U-M since 1983. Said Barber in the preface to the third edition, “In two subsequent revisions, the amount of material has almost doubled and the character of the book has necessarily changed, but I remain committed to my original objective of writing for those who wish to find the solution of specific practical engineering problems.”
