U-M to host 14th PHONONS conference

07/03/2012

PhononsThe 14th International Conference on Phonon Scattering in Condensed Matter (PHONONS 2012, www.phonons2012.com) will be held at the Michigan League on the University of Michigan campus during July 8-12. This conference brings together an international group of researchers from many fields (e.g., physics, mechanical engineering, materials science, and electrical engineering) who study the generation and propagation of vibrations in solids and their applications in heat transfer, thermoelectric energy conversion, sensors, metrology, and electronic devices. The chair of the conference is Kevin Pipe, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

Some of the planned topics are:

  • Phonons in nanoscale structures and MEMS
  • Electron-phonon interactions
  • Raman scattering
  • Neutron and x-ray inelastic scattering
  • Phonons in glasses and disordered materials
  • Phonon transport at interfaces
  • Surface acoustic wave science and technology
  • Phonons in electronic and optoelectronic devices
  • New computational techniques
  • Phonons in single molecules and organic/biological materials
  • Thermal phonon transport in nanostructured materials
  • Coherent phonons and ultrafast acoustics
  • Phonon microscopy and imaging
  • Solitons and nonlinear phenomena
  • Lattice dynamics
  • Phonons in ultracold gases
  • Ultrafast phase transitions
  • Phononic crystals and metamaterials
  • Optomechanics
