Cell-sized mechanosensitive and biosensing compartment programmed with DNA

What defines a living cell? How does one capture the molecular essence of life? These fundamental questions underpin the collaborative research program led by U-M ME Professor Allen Liu and University of Minnesota Professor Vincent Noireaux. The pair uses molecular components to construct prototypes of synthetic cells displaying the minimal characteristics of life. Their “cell analogs” shed light on basic biological processes, and also provide new tools for biotechnology and medicine.

Liu’s research was recently featured in the Research Features magazine. Read the article here: http://researchfeatures.com/2017/12/05/synthetic-cells-senses/

Liu joined U-M ME in 2012 and is the leader of the Liu Lab.
