Professor Jyoti Mazumder has been elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Election to National Academy of Engineering membership is one of the highest professional honors accorded an engineer. Members are elected to NAE membership by their peers (current NAE members). Members have distinguished themselves in business or academic management, in technical positions, as university faculty, or as leaders in government or private engineering organizations. Mazumder is recognized for “quantitative transport modeling for laser interaction and design and commercialization of direct metal deposition machines.”
Mazumder is the Robert H. Lurie Professor of Mechanical Engineering and is also director of the Center for Laser-Aided Intelligent Manufacturing (CLAIM), where he and his research group study the plasma present in laser processing and attempt to understand the basic physics of the interaction between light photons and material electrons.
