The Grand Challenges for Engineering is possibly the clearest and most compelling description of engineering for students and the public alike. The solutions to the fourteen Grand Challenges for Engineering were proposed in 2008as the goals necessary to realize the Vision: “Continuation of life on the planet, making our world more sustainable, secure, healthy and joyful.” Each of these challenges is a global-scale engineering system problem, like reverse-engineer the brain, provide access to clean water, manage the nitrogen cycle and cyberspace. Solutions to each require global engagement because the vision is for the planet. This presentation describes the origin of the Grand Challenges for Engineering and the development of the Grand Challenges Scholars Program, which is an engineering educational supplement to nearly any degree program that prepares the scholar to undertake and lead global problems like these Grand Challenges for Engineering.

C.D. Mote, Jr. is the President of the National Academy of Engineering. He held an endowed chair in mechanical systems at the University of California at Berkeley, chaired the Mechanical Engineering Department from 1987 to 1991, and served as vice chancellor from 1991 to 1998. Dr. Mote was recruited to the presidency of the University of Maryland, College Park, a position he held for twelve years when he was appointed Regents’ Professor. Dr. Mote’s recognitions include the National Academy of EngineeringFounders Award, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Medal, and the Humbolt Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany. He is an honorary fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Academy of Mechanics, Acoustical Society of America, and America Association for Advancement of Science. He is a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and an Honorary Academician of the Academia Sinica. Dr. Mote holds four honorary doctorates and two honorary professorships.
