Volker Sick, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Mechanical Engineering and DTE Energy Professor of Advanced Energy Research, has received the ASME 2023 Edwin F. Church Medal “for pioneering contributions to mechanical engineering education through high-impact experiential learning programs that broaden students’ disciplinary, cultural, and moral understanding.”

The ASME Edwin F. Church Medal, established in 1972, is awarded to an individual who has rendered eminent service in increasing the value, importance, and attractiveness of mechanical engineering education. A formal presentation of the award took place during the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Education Leadership Summit, on March 25th, 2023, in San Juan, PR.

Dr. Sick’s research focuses on finding sustainable solutions to help address the climate crisis, like accelerating deployments of CO2-utilization technologies that will innovate existing infrastructure and manufacturing processes. He also works on developing and applying optical measurement techniques to diagnose diseases of the human eye.

In response to this honor, Dr. Sick said, “I am honored and humbled to receive the 2023 ASME Edwin F. Church Medal. I am thankful for the academic environment at the University of Michigan that encourages academic innovation and that has allowed the introduction of the International Minor for Engineers, the Techlab collection of courses in the Center for Entrepreneurship, and more.”

Congratulations, Dr. Sick.
