Michael Thouless

Annually the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) honors someone with the Nadai Medal. This year, 2021, they have selected Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Michael Thouless, as the awardee.

The Nadai Medal is awarded in recognition of significant contributions and outstanding achievements which broaden the field of materials engineering. Such achievements may be, for example, in the areas of education, research, development, and service to the field and profession.

Thouless was selected, “for seminal studies of fracture and plasticity of thin films, layered materials, and adhesive materials, particularly pioneering efforts related to all aspects of cohesive zone modeling.”
