Serife Tol receives ASME C.D. Mote Jr., Early Career Award

09/09/2024

Serife Tol, associate professor of mechanical engineering, has received the ASME C.D. Mote Jr., Early Career Award. This award celebrates demonstrated research excellence in the fields of vibration and acoustics.

Tol accepted this award and delivered a keynote on “Harnessing Structural Periodicity for Wave Control Toward Sensing, Harvesting, and Space Applications” at the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences & Computers and Information in Engineering Conference 2024 in Washington, DC. The keynote explored the new frontiers in wave control opened by the study of structural periodicity in engineered materials, such as metamaterials, phononic crystals, and metasurfaces.

Tol is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her interdisciplinary research spans applications in energy harvesting, sensing, vibration mitigation, waveguiding, and space designs. She has developed a robust research program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Department of Energy (DoE), and the Department of Defense Office of Naval Research (ONR). To date, Tol has successfully secured over $2.5 million in research funding for her program.

When asked how she felt about receiving this award, Tol said, “I am deeply honored to receive the ASME C.D. Mote Jr., Early Career Award. It serves as a reminder of the dedication and hard work that went into achieving this, and I thank everyone who has supported me on this journey. Inspired by C. Daniel Mote Jr. and ASME’s values, I am dedicated to pursuing innovative research and advancing our field.”
