Each year, the U-M Department of Mechanical Engineering recognizes undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated excellence in research, in academics, in leadership, and/or in the embodiment of the character and leadership critical to a successful career in mechanical engineering.
Susan Cheng has won the award for using “her expertise as an ecosystem ecologist to examine the ‘ecosystem’ of STEM, building partnerships that inspire changes in equity and inclusion at the classroom, department, and disciplinary levels.”

Volker Sick has received the ASME 2023 Edwin F. Church Medal “for pioneering contributions to mechanical engineering education through high-impact experiential learning programs that broaden students’ disciplinary, cultural, and moral understanding.”

The Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship supports outstanding doctoral students who have achieved candidacy and are actively working on dissertation research and writing. The Fellowship seeks to support students working on dissertations that are unusually creative, ambitious, and impactful.
