MEng Automotive Engineering, MEng Global Automotive Engineering, and MEng Manufacturing students can pursue their programs entirely on campus, entirely online, or a combination of on-campus and online by term. It is important to note that they cannot take a mix of both online and on-campus courses during the same term. The online modality is the same academic rigor as the on-campus option. International students pursuing the program on an F1 Visa must meet the on-campus requirements and are not eligible to pursue the program as online students.
The tuition rate for students pursuing the program online differs from the tuition rate for students pursuing the program on campus. Find the Graduate Tuition (On-campus) and Distance Learning (online) tuition on the Office of the Registrar, Tuition and Fees site. Once you reach the site, select College of Engineering for the School/College; select Graduate for the Study Level. Then click on Submit. Then, scroll down to find the Graduate (on-campus) and Distance Learning (online) tuition. Tuition rates are approved each June by the U-M Board of Regents.
On-Campus versus Online for MEng Automotive Engineering, Manufacturing, and MEng Global Automotive and MEng Manufacturing Engineering students:
- Students admitted to the program as on-campus students will be designated in the University of Michigan system as on-campus students, enroll in on-campus course sections, and pay (on-campus) tuition. On-campus students will register for course sections, such as 001 or 0XX. Courses with sections of 001 or 0XX typically have the course mode of “In-Person”. On-campus Students classified as on-campus are not allowed to register for online/distance sections, usually 881, 98X, or 99X.
- Students admitted to the program as online students will be classified as online students in the University of Michigan system, enroll in the online/distance course sections, and pay the Distance Learning tuition. Course sections, such as 88X, 98X, or 99X, are for students pursuing the program as online/distance students. Courses with sections of 88X, 98X, or 99X typically have the course mode of “Distance”. Students classified as online cannot register for any on-campus sections, usually 001 or 0XX.
- A student may contact their Graduate Program coordinator and request to change their classification in the U-M system from online to on-campus or on-campus to online by term. When the student is classified as online in the U-M system for a given term, the student will register for online course sections and pay Online/Distance Learning tuition for that term. Not all courses are offered online. When the student is classified as on campus in the U-M system for a given term, the student will register for on-campus course sections and pay Graduate (on-campus) tuition for that term.
Online students:
- Students complete all assignments, quizzes, and exams online.
- Students will have access to recordings of each class lecture so they can view the recordings at their convenience.
- The lectures are recorded in two classrooms specially built for online classes, as they have full recording studios in the back. The rooms are equipped with ceiling microphones to capture student questions.
- Students can download and view the recorded lectures.
- The recorded lectures can also be fast-forwarded and rewound; students can even speed up or slow down the rate of speech of the professor’s lecture.
- Students can view the professor’s live notes in the slides.
- Many instructors provide online students with a Zoom link so they have the option to attend the course remotely as it is occurring.

- Students receive course requirements from the course instructor through the course Canvas Learning Management System.
