SUGS/JI-SUGS Applicants

Sequential Undergraduate/Graduate Studies (SUGS)

The Rackham Sequential Undergraduate/Graduate Studies (SUGS) program was developed to promote greater enrollment of qualified College of Engineering (CoE) students in the Master of Science in Engineering program by making it possible for students to pursue a five-year sequential BSE/MSE (four years of BSE work and one year of MSE work). The ME SUGS program is only for ME undergraduate students enrolled at the U of M Ann Arbor campus. All applications are reviewed by the Graduate Admissions Committee and admission is granted on a case-by-case basis. All SUGS students are required to enroll in two full terms as a graduate student at Rackham and pay full tuition.

Deadlines:

Fall Admission: January 15th
Winter Admission: August 1st

Eligibility: To be eligible for the ME SUGS program, a student must satisfy the following minimum requirements:

  • Be a declared Mechanical Engineering undergraduate student at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.
  • Have a 3.6 cumulative GPA or better
  • Not be enrolled in two undergraduate programs or in a dual-degree program.
  • Once a student has matriculated to our SUGS program, they may not request to move their admission to our Master’s program in order to pursue a dual degree program. If you are interested in a dual degree, you should not apply to SUGS but rather apply to the MSE. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Application Process: The application process has two steps.

  • During their junior year, the student meets with an ME academic advisor in the Academic Services Office to complete a SUGS Election Form. The student works with the advisor to outline a preliminary study plan to make the appropriate course selections for their junior and senior years, including courses for proposed double-counting and transferring. This plan can be updated after admission to SUGS as needed in consultation with the Graduate Coordinator.
  • During their senior year, the student must apply for SUGS by completing the Rackham online application form. The GRE is waived for ME SUGS students. A statement of purpose, a personal statement, and three letters of recommendation are required (two of the three letters must be from academic professors). There is an admission fee. See the ME Graduate Admissions page for more information.
  • SUGS students must enroll in Rackham for a minimum of two full terms (at least 9 credits per term), paying full Rackham tuition. SUGS students do not dual register. SUGS students should utilize their Rackham registration NOT their undergraduate registration.

Funding Opportunity for ME SUGS Students: ME SUGS Scholars Program

Students in the SUGS program can double-count up to 9 credits and transfer 3 credits from undergraduate study.  Read more about the requirements for double-counting and transferring here.

UM-SJTU Joint Institute – Sequential Undergraduate/Graduate Studies (JI-SUGS)

This program is designed for students who receive an undergraduate ME BSE degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Joint Institute and wish to pursue a Mechanical Engineering Master’s degree at UM. All applications are reviewed by the Graduate Admissions Committee and admission is granted on a case-by-case basis. All JI-SUGS students are required to complete at least 24 credit hours in residence at UM Ann Arbor and pay full tuition.
