Overview

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at the University of Michigan (U-M)! Mechanical Engineering at U-M is an internationally recognized leader in the fundamental ME fields of thermal and fluid sciences, solid mechanics and materials, dynamics and controls, and mechanical designs, as well as in thematic areas such as manufacturing, automotive engineering, micro- and nanotechnology, biomechanics and biosystems, and energy and environment.

The Mechanical Engineering undergraduate and graduate programs provide students with an excellent foundation, and enable students to tailor their education to best suit their career goals.

The U-M ME is consistently ranked among the top five mechanical engineering programs nationwide by the US News and World Report. In the recent National Research Council (NRC) assessment of U.S. PhD programs, U-M ME earned exceptional marks, leading to an overall #2 ranking among large institutions by the website PhDs.org, using their default weightings on the NRC data:

Graduate Application Deadlines

Fall Term 2012 Admission (September):

  • For Doctoral (Ph.D.) Applicants:  December 15th
  • For Master (MSE) Applicants:  January 15th
  • For Sequential Graduate and Undergraduate Studies (SGUS) and Engineering Global Leadership (EGL) applicants:  January 15th

Winter Term 2012 Admission (January):

  • For Master (MSE) Applicants:  August 1st
  • For Sequential Graduate and Undergraduate Studies (SGUS) and Engineering Global Leadership (EGL) applicants:  August 1st

Please note: The Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department accepts Ph.D. applications for the fall term only.
