Engineering Your Journey Grad Student Career Chat: Dr. Shantonio Birch
May 17, 2024 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
As part of the Rackham Faculty Allies Grant, the Department of Mechanical Engineering is excited to launch a series of career discussions with mechanical engineers. Join us to learn how various mechanical engineers have navigated their personal and professional journeys as engineers, including challenges they’ve encountered along the way and how they grew as engineers when solving them. We hope these discussions provide you with an opportunity to meet other students and faculty in our department, connect with others that have shared interests, and reflect on how you want to build your journey through engineering.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Shantonio Birch, CEO & Founder, ThermoVerse LLC

Dr. Shantonio Birch, Ph.D. is the CEO & founder of ThermoVerse LLC. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and a MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. As a PhD student in Prof. Kevin Pipe’s Group, he has laid the foundation for tackling a decade-old stalemate on the room-temperature thermoelectric performance of soft/disordered materials. At ThermoVerse LLC, he spearheads a venture dedicated to distributed thermal controls and enclosure thermal management. Birch is currently serving out his tenure as a 2023 Department of Energy Innovation Crossroads Fellow at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he is actively shaping the transition to net-zero energy through the digitalization and decentralization of space heating and cooling.
ThermoVerse is an early-stage advanced technology startup located at Newlab, Michigan Central. We specialize in distributed thermal controls and enclosure thermal management with applications in buildings, energy and the mobility sectors.
