The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) is receiving a significant endowment that will generate additional resources for the Department. Tim Manganello, Executive Chairman of BorgWarner, Inc. and the BorgWarner Foundation have announced a $2M gift to endow the Department Chair position of Mechanical Engineering at U-M. This is the first endowed Department Chair in the history of the College of Engineering (CoE). It will generate funds for the Department, which will enable new departmental initiatives and help to achieve some of the strategic goals that set in the ME strategic plan.

In addition, BorgWarner had already donated a generous gift to name the Galleria in the GGB New Addition Building, and had been a major sponsor of ME’s SAE MRacing team. Mr. Manganello is an extremely loyal alumnus (BSE ME ’72, MSE ME [Dearborn] ’75, PDM [Dearborn] ’81); he has contributed his valuable time and effort serving the ME Department and the College of Engineering. He visits campus regularly as a mentor to speak to ME students in classes and in student societies; he has also served on the CoE Engineering Advisory Council.

An official celebration took place on January 31, 2013 to thank Tim Manganello and BorgWarner for their generous gifts.
