ME Professor Kon-Well Wang is being honored with the SPIE Smart Structures and Materials Lifetime Achievement Award for 2011. He will receive the award during the SPIE Smart Structures/NDE 2011 Conference and present a Plenary Lecture at the Conference in 2012. This Award is presented to a distinguished scientist or engineer in the field of Smart Structures and Materials to recognize his/her lifetime contributions.
Wang is the Stephen P. Timoshenko Collegiate Professor and Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research on adaptive structural systems has cross-linked multiple fields; developing methodologies to snthesize novel structures with piezoelectric circuitry networks, bio-inspired composites, or carbon nano-tube/fiber materials for structural dynamics and controls enhancement. His other recent recognitions include the ASME Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Best Paper Award in Structures and Structural Dynamics (2010), the ASME Dynamic Systems and Controls Rudolf Kalman Best Paper Award (2009), the ASME Adaptive Structures and Materials System Prize (2008), the NASA Tech Brief Award (2007), and the ASME N. O. Myklestad Award (2007). Wang is a Fellow of ASME, AAAS, and IOP.
