Hulbert, Saitou Receive Outstanding Achievement Awards

The recipients of the 2006-07 ME Department’s Outstanding Achievement Awards are Professor Greg Hulbert ( https://me-web2.engin.umich.edu/zope/pubdir/bio?uniqname=hulbert ) and Associate Professor Kazu Saitou ( https://me-web2.engin.umich.edu/zope/pubdir/bio?uniqname=kazu ).
Professor Hulbert is an expert in multi-body dynamics and computational mechanics and at the same time, a dedicated teacher. Above all, Greg personifies the perfect academic citizen with a service record that speaks for itself. As a member of the College Curriculum Committee, Greg stood out as one of the committee members who had the best interests of the College at heart. He served as the ME Department’s Associate Chair and ME Undergraduate program Director between June 2002 and December 2006. His dedication to the welfare of the Department is exemplified in the manner he devoted his time in seeing the Department through the ABET accreditation, where our Department received praise. The fact that the ME undergraduate program has grown to have almost 700 students is an indication of the workload that he shouldered. Greg also brings distinction to the University through his service to the community at large, notably as President of the US Association for Computational Mechanics.

Professor Saitou has demonstrated a high level of achievement in research, teaching and service contributing to the ME Department’s stature nationally and internationally. His research work in assembly synthesis, embedded assemblies and eco-design of structures is unique and has resulted in twelve doctoral dissertations, more than 100 papers, a couple of patents, significant support from government and industry sponsors. He has taught all the courses in the core design and manufacturing undergraduate sequence. Moreover, he has always been willing to “take the slack” in any teaching needs arising. He has been an outstanding citizen in the department serving in numerous committees.
