Undergraduate Student Awards

There are two opportunities each academic year for Mechanical Engineering students to apply for a variety of awards. During the Fall term, you can apply for the College of Engineering's Leaders and Honors Awards. During the Winter term, you can apply for the Mechanical Engineering Departmental Awards. All ME students are encouraged to apply.

 

College of Engineering Leaders and Honors Awards

Mechanical Engineering Department Awards

You may apply for multiple awards. Most awards will have multiple recipients.

Application deadline was March 8, 2021 and is now closed.

Community Support and Communication Award

Eligibility: A Mechanical Engineering student who has demonstrated exceptional support for the Mechanical Engineering community under pandemic conditions.
Award amount: $4,000
Term Paid: Winter 2021
More Info: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented changes to student learning and interaction over the past year.    This award is to recognize a student or students who have contributed to the support and wellbeing of their peers under pandemic conditions.   This may include helping the engineering community adapt to demands of virtual classrooms, workspaces, and/or research, developing innovative communication or organizational practices to better accomplish day-to-day academic or business processes, or generally aiding peer wellbeing as many activities become distant and virtual.
How to apply: Please complete the application form and upload a copy of your resume and a short self-nomination statement which describes your success with supporting fellow students over the past year.

 

J.A. Bursley Mechanical Engineering Award

Eligibility: ME Student with senior standing with distinguished scholastic and leadership achievement.  Student must be enrolled during the term the award recipient is selected.
How to apply: All applicants for this year's College of Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Awards will be automatically considered and do not need to reapply. If you have not applied for any other awards, please complete the application form and the short self-nomination statement which describes your accomplishments as an ME student and upload a copy of your resume. You may have up to 2 letters of recommendation emailed to: me-aso@umich.edu.
Award amount: $2,500
More Info: The J.A. Bursley endowment fund has been in existence since 1953. One Senior in the Mechanical Engineering department who demonstrates, by scholastic record and leadership abilities in extracurricular activities, unusual promise of developing into a leader in this profession, is selected for this award.
Term Paid: Winter 2021


Robert M. Caddell Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: ME Student with Junior or Senior standing with a study focus on Materials and/or Manufacturing. Student should be enrolled during the term of the award: Fall 2021.
How to apply: Please complete the application form and the short self-nomination statement which describes your accomplishments as an ME student and upload a copy of your resume. You may have up to 2 letters of recommendation emailed to: me-aso@umich.edu.
Award amount: $2,000
Term Paid: Fall 2021 (paid in Winter 2021 only if graduating this term)

 

Lloyd H. Donnell Scholarship Fund

Eligibility: ME Student who has demonstrated excellence in mechanics and who will be present for the tenure of the award: Fall 2021-Winter 2022.
How to apply: Please complete the application form and the short self-nomination statement which describes your accomplishments as an ME student and upload a copy of your resume. You may have up to 2 letters of recommendation emailed to: me-aso@umich.edu.
Award amount: $5,500
Term Paid: split between Fall 2021 and Winter 2022

 

R & B Machine Tool Company Scholarship

Eligibility: Student/s must be a resident of the State of Michigan with Junior or Senior standing in Mechanical Engineering with a strong GPA and a study focus on Materials and/or Manufacturing. Preference given to residents of Saline, MI. Student/s must be a declared ME student during the term the award recipient is selected and must be from Michigan to apply.
Award amount: $4,000
Term Paid: Fall 2021

 

S. Jack Hu Family and Friends Undergraduate Research Award

Eligibility: Will be awarded to support one or more undergraduate Mechanical Engineering students to engage in research with faculty in Mechanical Engineering. The student(s) must demonstrate outstanding academic performance and a keen interest in research.
How to apply: Please complete the application form and upload a copy of your CV/Resume and a detailed 2-page research proposal that includes a budget, and a letter of support from the faculty supervising the research.
Notes: Funds may be used to pay for temporary employment efforts towards the research project and/or for materials, supplies, lab time. Students who are receiving course credit for research positions may not be hired via this award.
Award amount: $1,000
Term Paid: Fall 2021 or Winter 2022 (some flexibility exists)

 

Mechanical Engineering Department Spirit Award

Eligibility: Student/s with Senior standing in Mechanical Engineering who has demonstrated significant leadership skills, strong interpersonal skills and a dedication to engineering.
Award amount: at least $500
Term Paid: Winter 2021
More Info: This award is given to a deserving ME senior or seniors who best embody the character and leadership critical to a
Successful career in mechanical engineering.

How to apply: Please complete the application form and upload a copy of your resume and a short self-nomination statement which describes your accomplishments as an ME student You will need to have one ME professor submit a letter of support on your behalf which may be emailed to: me-aso@umich.edu.

 

Spring Banquet

All award winners and their families will be invited to the end-of-year ME Spring Banquet to celebrate their accomplishments. The CoE Award winners and their families will also be invited to the Student Leaders and Honors Brunch in March. These events will be postponed or canceled until further notice due to the COVID-19 virus.
